Three match days before the end, the promotion race in the 2nd Bundesliga is just as intensified as the relegation battle. In mathematical terms, not a single one of the 18 teams can already plan for the new season, whereby the five clubs from VfL Bochum in sixth place to SV Sandhausen in tenth place will very certainly be second-rate for the coming season.
Otherwise there is high voltage. At the top of the table, Arminia Bielefeld should no longer be denied promotion, but behind it is a highly intense three-way battle between Hamburger SV (53 points), VfB Stuttgart (52) and 1. FC Heidenheim (51) for the second direct Ascent place and the relegation place. The piquant thing about this constellation is that Heidenheim and HSV still face each other on Sunday. Before this possibly deciding match, both of course want to put themselves in a good starting position in the English week. The most recent 0: 2 at home against VfL Bochum was a setback for the purple and white in the fight for relegation. Nevertheless, with 35 points on the account, there is hope and also intact not to have to tremble until the last game day. Sandhausen is also one of the league’s strongest teams in the Mercedes-Benz-Arena. After a failed start at Erzgebirge Aue (1: 3) it looked like Sandhausen was trembling until the end. But then coach Uwe Koschinat turned the right screws with the introduction of a chain of five and was able to look forward to a whopping eleven points from the recent five games with a new tactical order. The fact that only two goals were allowed in these five games and that there was a remarkable 0-0 against leaders Arminia Bielefeld last Friday underlines the new defensive strength.
Sandhausen will also make life difficult for Stuttgart with the increased self-confidence. However, VfB knows the seriousness of the situation and that a win is imperative. And we trust the Stuttgart squad, which is certainly better manned, to withstand this pressure.
