Wolves sign up Monaghan

Warrington have signed former Australia Test three-quarter Joel Monaghan on a 12-month contract.

The 28-year-old quit Canberra Raiders to spare the club any further embarrassment after the publication on the internet of a lewd photograph.

His opportunity to play alongside older brother Michael, the Warrington hooker, came after fellow Australian Chris Hicks announced his immediate retirement, thus creating space on both the club’s overseas quota and salary cap.

Since heading to Europe, Monaghan was linked with Castleford and Catalans Dragons, but has decided to join his brother at Warrington.

Wolves coach Tony Smith said: “We are delighted to be signing Joel as players of his calibre do not become available too often.

“The timing of this opportunity, along with Chris Hicks reconsidering his retirement, has meant it has all fallen into place for the best interests of all concerned.

“Joel is a player we have considered signing in the past and it’s fair to say that the chance has come along sooner than expected.

“But we also feel that it is absolutely the right time to stand by and support Joel and his brother Michael and this will certainly enhance our squad for the season ahead.”

Monaghan won five Australia caps and played for the Kangaroos in the 2008 World Cup final.
Hicks retires

Hicks, 33, reversed a decision to hang up his boots earlier this year when he signed a new 12-month contract, but has now decided to call time on his playing career.

“I see this opportunity as a good time to reconsider my retirement,” he said. “Since realising that this move for Joel could be on the cards, it’s helped make the decision that much easier knowing that there will be a sound replacement stepping into the club.

“I’ve been friends with both Mick and Joel for a while and the chance for them to play together will be a great move for the club. I have made lots of friends and take away nothing but fond memories. Warrington will always be close to my heart.”

Hicks scored 71 tries, including a hat-trick in this year’s Challenge Cup final, in 82 appearances over three seasons for the Wolves and in 2008 became the first Warrington player to score in all his side’s matches during a season.

“I personally would really like to thank Chris for his services over the past three seasons,” added Smith.

“Everybody here at the club has thoroughly enjoyed working with him. Both on and off the field Chris has always acted like a true professional. He has left many happy memories and will do for years to come.”
