Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will take a cautious approach when his side take on Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League next week.

Spurs travel to Giuseppe Meazza to take on the holders, now managed by Rafa Benitez, on Wednesday in the club’s first major task of their debut campaign in the competition.

A draw away to Werder Bremen and a home win over FC Twente has seen the North Londoners make a steady start, but Redknapp knows Inter will be a step up.

“We can’t go out there and be wide open. We’ve got to be sensible against the better teams,” said the former Portsmouth manager.

“We have to be difficult to beat, first and foremost. I wouldn’t sit here and kid ourselves – if we came back with a point we would all be delighted.

“We want to win, obviously, but you have got to hit them on the break. You are not going to suddenly start swarming all over them. They are a top team.”

Diego Milito and Esteban Cambiasso, both of whom were influential in the Nerazzurri’s triumphant run last season, could miss out for the hosts after picking up injuries on international duty for Argentina midweek.

Redknapp has taken little comfort from that, however, as he believes the Italians ooze class in abundance.
    Dangers

“They have real dangers. [Samuel] Eto’o is playing fantastic at the moment for them. It will be a great game for the players to go there and show what they can do.

“We have always got attacking players. Whoever we pick we will have our share of players who want to go forward and create and score goals. That is how we play.”

Tottenham are deadlocked at the top of Group A on four points along with Wednesday’s opponents and Redknapp admits the upcoming back-to-back encounters with Inter could be crucial to their fate.

“We’ve had a great start,” he said. “We played well in Germany and had a great win against FC Twente. It’s still going to be tough.

“Our group is so tight. We’ve two games against Inter Milan now and I think we have to get some points from those games.

“It’s a big challenge and a fantastic game to look forward to.”
