Tom Daley overcame Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham to secure the Commonwealth 10metre platform title for England.

Daley and the Australian diver traded the lead throughout the competition but it was the 16-year-old who finished the stronger and held his nerve in the closing stages.

In the final round of dives Daley, who also took gold in the 10m synchro on Tuesday, had a slim lead of just 1.75 points but kept cool under the pressure and produced a fine effort.

Mitcham was last to go and attempted a more difficult dive but a poor entry into the water saw him heavily marked down by the judges.

Daley scored a total of 538.35 points to finish a comfortable 27.20 ahead of Mitcham, although the margin of victory did not reflect how closely-fought the majority of the event was.

Mitcham had qualified 9.16 points ahead of Daley, although the English teenager had claimed he did not want to waste his best dives before the final.

In the final, Daley took an early lead as he performed his most difficult dive first but even though he scored 10s across the board in the third round, Mitcham had gained the advantage by the halfway point.

There was almost nothing to separate the duo after the fourth round, with Daley edging back into the lead by 0.7.

He extended the gap by just over a point heading into the climax of the event, where Mitcham’s collapse handed another gold medal to the world champion.
