Jose Maria Olazabal’s manager has claimed that the two-time Masters champion would accept the 2012 Ryder Cup captaincy if offered the role.
Olazabal has previously warned that his ongoing health concerns could force him to reject the chance to succeed Colin Montgomerie as European skipper.
However, his manager Sergio Gomez insists the 44-year-old Spaniard would now take on the job of captaining Europe at Medinah in two years.
“I’m quite sure he would take the captaincy if the job was offered to him,” Gomez stated on Tuesday. “I think he’s fit and ready and would be delighted.”
The European Tour could even formalise Olazabal’s appointment as early as next month with a news conference expected at the Abu Dhabi Championship.
Tour chief executive George O’Grady has already intimated that the Spaniard is the overwhelming favourite for the job.
“Just about every player on the tour, when I last talked to them, would love to see him as the captain,” O’Grady said at the Dubai World Championship.
“He has not been invited yet but I think if every player you are talking to sees him as an inspirational figure, then the people in a room on a given day have got to vote it.”
