Liverpool have announced that they have agreed a £22.8million (€26.5m) deal with Ajax for striker Luis Suarez.

The Premier League club now have permission to discuss personal terms with the Uruguayan and a medical will take place.

Liverpool have been in talks with Ajax for most of January regarding a possible deal and they have now reached an agreement ahead of Monday’s deadline.

A statement on the Anfield outfit’s official website read: “Liverpool football club announced this afternoon that they had agreed a fee of up to €26.5m with Ajax for the transfer of Luis Suarez, subject to the completion of a medical.

“The club have now been given permission by Ajax to discuss personal terms with the player and his representatives.”
    Major signing

It will now be questioned whether Suarez will move to England to complement Fernando Torres or replace Liverpool’s current No.9.

The Spaniard has been the subject of a rejected bid from Chelsea, reportedly worth £35m, and Sky Sports News understands that the player is interested in moving to London.

Suarez was expected to provide sought-after attacking support for Torres as Liverpool’s parent company, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), set about rebuilding the underachieving club.

Ajax had set Friday night as a cut-off point for discussions, but the determination of Suarez to move to England is thought to have played a decisive role in forcing a deal, which marks FSG’s first major signing since taking over in October.

It was reported that the 24-year-old was a target of Tottenham after scoring three goals at the 2010 World Cup, where he was also sent off for an infamous handball against Ghana in quarter-finals.
