Kumar Sangakkara batted Sri Lanka into a strong position on day two of the second Test against the West Indies, although bad weather once again frustrated in Columbo.
Sri Lankan skipper Sangakkara notched his 24th Test century, reaching 135 not out as the hosts ended the day on 294-5.
But, just as in the first Test, a result already looks like it will be difficult to achieve with rain ensuring no play was possible in the final session after tea.
Resuming on 84-3, Sangakkara and partner Thilan Samaraweera rebuilt the innings in fine style during the morning session as they took advantage of a rather lacklustre bowling display from their opponents.
Both men were virtually untroubled, producing an array of shots and brought up their half-centuries as they added 115 runs before the lunch interval.
Sangakkara raced on towards three figures after the resumption as he lofted spinner Shane Shillingford for a six and a four in successive balls before reaching his ton in the next over.
But Samaraweera perished for 80 soon after as he picked out Shillingford on the fine leg boundary with a pull off the bowling of Dwayne Bravo.
That brought to an end a record Sri Lankan stand against the West Indies of 170 and prompted a spell of more sustained pressure from the visiting pace bowlers.
Angelo Mathews made a resolute 25, sharing a partnership of 69 with his captain, before he became Kemar Roach’s third victim, edging behind to Carlton Baugh.
Sangakkara remained a composed and impressive presence, though, as he continued to punish the bad balls and had reached 135 by tea alongside Prasanna Jayawardene (12 not out).
Hopes of pushing on further were dashed by the rain with the umpires calling it a day an hour after the evening session had been scheduled to start.
