Mark Cueto is refusing to get carried away after England’s victory over Australia, insisting the win is merely a step in the right direction.
Martin Johnson’s side clinched their second straight win against the Wallabies with a fantastic performance at Twickenham last Saturday.
The display was capped by a superb try from Cueto’s fellow winger Chris Ashton, who sprinted clear from deep inside his own half to breeze past Drew Mitchell and cross the line.
But despite the praise heaped on them after the match, Cueto believes that England still have plenty left to prove against the top sides in the world.
“It’s just another stepping stone in the right direction,” the 30-year-old told Sky Sports News.
Wins
“We spoke about the Sydney game (a 21-20 win in June) and we didn’t want to be a team that just reflected on that one game and that one great win.
“We wanted to back it up with better wins and bigger wins and week-in, week-out wins.
“We were massively disappointed against the All Blacks, we felt we were better than what we showed in that game.”
The Investec Internationals continue with a clash against Samoa at the weekend and Cueto thinks it is vital that England carry their momentum over into the next contest.
He added: “We had a massive point to prove at the weekend and similarly we have another massive point to prove.
“It’s no good winning one game then losing the next one or two, we want to back it up. We’ve got two games remaining in the series and they’re two massive games we want to win.”
