Makfi retired to stud
The French-trained Makfi has been retired to stud following a bout of ringworm.
The colt caused a 33/1 shock in the 2,000 Guineas earlier this year and proved the win was no fluke by landing the prestigious Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.
Although he was disappointing in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last month, connections had been considering a possible trip to the Breeders’ Cup.
He will instead take up stallion duties at Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire.
“He came back from Ascot with a little bit of ringworm and he has been retired to stud,” confirmed trainer Mikel Delzangles.
“He’s been a great horse to train this season and we have had a great year.
“It will be difficult to find another one like him, but we will try.”
Canford ruled out of Ascot
Canford Cliffs will miss his deciding showdown with Makfi at Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.
The three-year-old and the French colt Makfi have shared one win apiece this year following the 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes.
However a dirty scope means that the Richard Hannon-trained Cliffs has been ruled out of the meet.
“The scope was marginal, but Canford Cliffs is now such a valuable commodity that you cannot take any chances so, having listened to veterinary advice from Mike O’Gorman, we have no option but to pull out,” the trainer told richardhannonracing.tv
“Everyone in the yard is absolutely gutted and we realise that it could well cost us the trainers’ championship, but the welfare of the horse comes first and you need to be 100 per cent to go into a battle for a Group One.
“I must stress that the tracheal wash was not terrible, but the reading was disappointing and, though he’d probably be fine if there was another race coming up in a week or so, the fact is there is nothing left over a mile, just the Foret over seven furlongs.
“However, the great thing is that we have him in training for next year – he has done us proud this season, and he’ll be back better than ever as a four-year-old.”
