Button may support Lewis
McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh says the team will speak in the next few days about Jenson Button supporting Lewis Hamilton’s title bid.
Following the Korean GP and his 12th placed finish, Button is all but mathematically out of the world title chase as he trails new championship leader Fernando Alonso by 42 points with 50 still to play for.
But while Korea delivered a crushing blow to Button’s title aspirations, his team-mate’s were given a much-needed boost. Hamilton finished the grand prix in second place and is now just 21 points off the pace.
The huge gap between the team-mates and Button’s all-but-over title campaign raised the question about whether McLaren will call on the reigning world champion to support Hamilton in the final two races.
And that, Whitmarsh admits, is something McLaren will have to speak about before the next race in Brazil.
“Mathematically it’s not impossible for Jenson, but it looks quite tough, very difficult for him,” Whitmarsh said. “So we’ll talk about that before we get to Brazil.”
Hamilton admitted he was not yet sure whether Button would support his title charge.
“We both push as hard as we can to score as many points as we can for the team,” he added.
“Clearly we’re both far behind, him further than me. I’m 21 points behind, so I’ve got to get a lot of points.
“I don’t know what will happen. You will have to speak to Martin on what he thinks he will have to do.
“All I know is I have to get as high up as possible, and it would be fantastic to have Jenson with me.”
Nothing to lose for Button
Jenson Button is aiming to simply “go out and enjoy” the inaugural Korean Grand Prix as he tries to make up ground in the race for the title.
The McLaren driver has not been able to match the pace of Ferrari and Red Bull in recent races and is now 31 points adrift of championship leader Mark Webber.
To haul himself back into title contention, Button is likely to have to end a victory drought that stretches back to the fourth race of the season in China.
And now the 30-year-old feels that the pressure is off and he will have nothing to lose in Korea’s maiden Formula One race on Sunday.
“I’m just going to go out and enjoy it and see what happens,” said Button.
Deficit
“It’s not the easiest position for me to be in, 30 points behind, but we are going to give it all we can. We’ve three races to go and 75 points to play for, so it is still possible.
“But we have to hope we can fight on a level playing field with the Red Bull, and that’s our aim.”
However, the defending champion realises that McLaren’s pace needs to improve if they are to challenge for wins again and is hoping that the upgrades that were rushed onto the car for Japan last time out will come good.
Button added: “We’ve some good updates and hopefully fingers crossed it will make enough of a difference, and if it does we’re still in the hunt.
“Some of the upgrades we had in Japan we knew we had to put them on the car because we want to fight for the championship.
Early
“But I think we put them on the car a little early because they were scheduled for here.
“But we have them on the car now and hopefully they’re going to work correctly – I’m sure they are – so I’m looking forward to driving the car around here.”
Button thinks the rollercoaster nature of the season, where no team or driver has been able to establish a significant advantage, will continue in the final three grands prix.
“For all of us it’s been quite up and down. We’ve all had some pretty poor events and some pretty good events as well,” Button said.
“It’s made the championship very exciting, so I’m looking forward to the next three races. I’m sure it’s going to be pretty mixed up.
“If you look at the last few races Ferrari and Red Bull have had the legs on us. But I’m hoping in these next three we’ll be closer and that will make for an exciting fight to the end of the season.”
Last chance for Button
Jenson Button accepts that his chances of winning the Formula One world title will be “almost impossible” if McLaren cannot beat Red Bull at the next round in Korea.
The reigning champion could only manage fourth place in the Japanese Grand Prix last time out and is now 41 points behind Mark Webber, who holds top spot in the stadings.
McLaren had hoped a series of revisions and upgrades would give them a boost in performance at Suzuka but they were still well behind the pace of the Red Bulls.
And Button now realises that if Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull team-mate Webber can repeat the one-two they recorded in Japan, his title hopes will almost certainly be finished.
“It’s a lot more difficult for us now, as a team and in the drivers’ championship,” the 30-year-old said.
“In Korea, if we don’t turn up with some good improvements and we don’t have the legs on the Red Bulls, it’s almost impossible then.”
Parts
He added: “There are a quite a few things on the car. Some of them worked well, the other parts didn’t work quite as expected.
“But they will be on the car in Korea. We know they give us a good chunk of lap time and it was disappointing they didn’t work here.”
Despite the disappointing results, Button was still quick to praise the efforts his team made to fit the new parts.
“I’ve never seen so many parts put on a car, every race we go to. It’s just a pity that we couldn’t run some of the parts here,” he said.
“Hopefully in Korea we’ll have a step forward. Hopefully all the changes we make will challenge the Red Bulls.”
Although Webber currently has a points advantage, Button predicts it will be Vettel who proves to be stronger during the title run in.
Button said: “Vettel has to beat Mark twice more to be on the same points as him, and I’d say that Vettel does have the legs on him in qualifying. Over three races, he would have the advantage over Mark.
“If those two cars have an advantage over everyone else, I don’t think there’ll be any pressure on Vettel and I think he’ll perform better.”
