Hughton declares Carroll faith
Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is confident Andy Carroll’s off-field problems will be a thing of the past.
The Magpies striker was fined £1,000 on Monday after admitting assaulting a man in a Newcastle nightclub last December.
The 21-year-old pleaded guilty to common assault and was ordered to pay an additional £2,500 compensation at Newcastle Crown Court.
The impending verdict did not affect Carroll on Saturday as he headed the winner in Newcastle’s 2-1 victory at West Ham, ending a run of five games without a goal.
And Hughton has faith the England Under 21 international will remain focused on his game.
“I’m pleased for the lad himself and everybody that’s supported him around the club,” he told Sky Sports News.
Chapter over
“It’s an episode that’s very much in the past now and we’ll push on from that.
“He’s a lad that is able to put these things behind him, as we saw in his performance on Saturday. It’s good to get that chapter out of the way.”
Last week Carroll was bailed to live with club captain Kevin Nolan after appearing in court charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend.
It seems to be a positive move so far, with Nolan equalising on Saturday with his fourth of the season before Carroll claimed his fifth, and Hughton is glad Nolan is looking out for his young striker.
“Kevin looks after him very well,” added the Toon boss.
“I think he arranges his supper at the right time and makes sure he’s tucked in on time to get a full night’s sleep!
“If the two of them continue to score the goals and put in the performances they did at West Ham then I’m quite happy with that arrangement.”
Ameobi – I can partner Carroll
Shola Ameobi insists he and Andy Carroll can form the perfect strike partnership for Newcastle this season.
Magpies boss Chris Hughton reverted to a two-man attack on Saturday for the visit of Wigan, but chose to overlook Ameobi in favour of Peter Lovenkrands.
However, the 29-year-old came off the bench and produced a solid header to pave the way for a last-gasp equaliser from Fabricio Coloccini, which sealed the 2-2 draw.
Ameobi, who has scored four goals this season, is hoping his cameo was enough to persuade Hughton to start him alongside Carroll at West Ham on Saturday.
Qualities
“I know Andy and I can play together, I don’t just think it,” Ameobi told the Northern Echo.
“Andy feels the same way. We are two tall guys but we have different qualities.”
He added: “It’s important you have a partnership that the manager believes in. The manager was very close to starting with Andy and I.
“In the end he has made his decision to go with Pete, but I know it was in the back of his mind.”
Ameobi, who has started just three times this season, knows he will have to keep impressing for the Magpies if he wants to earn a regular first-team spot.
“The manager knew I was disappointed to be left out,” he added. “I thought I was unlucky not to be starting.”
“I need to be playing week in and week out. I just have to keep showing I’m worthy of a starting place.”
Wary
Ameobi was wary of threat posed by former Toon winger Charles N’Zogbia at the weekend, aware that the abuse the Latics man received from the St James’ Park faithful would only spur him on.
“I grabbed him and said ‘what do you think you are doing to us?’ It was all in good jest,” said Ameobi, who caught up with his former team-mate at half-time.
“My heart sank when I heard the boos because he thrives on that kind of thing.
“He is a good lad, when he left he was young and influenced by one or two things. It would have been great had he stayed a bit longer, but that was not the case. Players have different priorities and he has come back and hurt us. Thankfully, not too much.”
Hughton hopeful on deal
Chris Hughton admits he is ‘happy’ at Newcastle and would welcome the opportunity to pen a new contract.
The Magpies boss will see his current deal at St James’ Park expire at the end of the season and he is yet to agree fresh terms.
Hughton would be willing to discuss a contract extension, as he feels there is still plenty more for him to achieve in the North East.
He is, however, refusing to let the issue of his future become a distraction, as preserving Newcastle’s Premier League status remains his top priority at present.
“I have always said that I am very happy here at Newcastle,” he told Sky Sports News.
“I have been here for two-and-a-half years and it’s a place that I have always felt very comfortable. For me, though, that’s not an issue.
“The most important thing is that we start the season well. We have had our ups and downs, we are on the back of a couple of defeats, and we need to get back to winning ways as quick as we can.”
