Bale expected to face Milan
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is confident Gareth Bale will be fit for next month’s UEFA Champions League clash with AC Milan.
The 21-year-old winger lasted just nine minutes of Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Newcastle last weekend after limping off with a back injury.
First fears suggested the Welsh wizard would have to undergo surgery on what has been a niggling problem.
However, he should only be out for 10 days and Bale is expected to feature when Redknapp’s side travel to the San Siro to take on the Rossoneri on 15th February.
“He won’t need an operation. He should be fit in 10 days,” Redknapp said.
“He’ll make the Milan game in the San Siro, all being well.”
Bale’s last visit to the famous stadium resulted in a wonderful performance, as he netted a hat-trick in a thrilling 4-3 defeat by Inter Milan.
However, before the clash with Milan he will miss Premier League ties against Blackburn, Bolton and Sunderland as well as this weekend’s FA cup match with Fulham.
Wenger can cope without signings
Manager Arsene Wenger does not believe that Arsenal will suffer if they do not sign a defender before Monday’s transfer deadline.
It is no secret that a new centre-back is wanted at Emirates Stadium and there were reports of a shock loan move for Tottenham’s Jonathan Woodgate.
Thomas Vermaelen has not played since September due to injury, while Sebastien Squillaci is also sidelined to leave Arsenal short of options.
But Wenger is famous for his hatred of panic buying and the Frenchman will not abandon the frugal approach he has adopted with chairman Peter Hill-Wood and chief executive Ivan Gazidis.
Ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup meeting with Huddersfield, when Arsenal will continue a four-front quest to end an almost six-year silverware drought, he told his club’s official website: “I would not see it as a missed opportunity.
“I focus on my squad and I feel we have 22, 23 outfield players who can cope with what we need.
“Vermaelen looks to be making good progress, Squillaci is back available, so that was the only position we were short, at centre-backs.
“If I don’t make any signings it is because I have not identified a special player who could strengthen our squad at the moment.”
Cats close on Muntari
Sky Sports News understands Sunderland have been given permission to talk with Sulley Muntari.
It is reported that an approach from the Black Cats has been given the green light by Inter Milan, with the player and his agent now on their way to England to discuss personal terms.
Sunderland are hoping to put a deal in place which will see Ghanaian midfielder Muntari move to the Stadium of Light on an initial loan deal.
That switch could then be made permanent at the end of the season if both sides are willing to prolong their association.
Muntari will need no introduction to Sunderland supporters should he sign, with a season-long stay at Portsmouth in 2007/08 seeing him help the club to FA Cup glory.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports also understands that Sunderland’s efforts to land Stephane Sessegnon are close to collapse.
It was believed that Steve Bruce was closing in on the Paris St Germain midfielder, but any move has now hit a stumbling block and appears unlikely.
Devon and hell for Tim
Devon Alexander has told Timothy Bradley he is heading for boxing hell.
The unbeaten pair put their light-welterweight world titles on the line in Michigan on Saturday night in the fight of the year so far.
Bradley, who brings the WBO belt to the Silverdome is the betting favourite but WBC champion Alexander, says he will make a mockery of the betting.
The 23-year-old from St Louis has had six fewer fights but says boxing history repeats itself and experience will count for nothing when the two men meet head on.
“He will have to deal with what I am going to bring,” he told AOL Fanhouse.com.
“I know he’s trying to boast himself up, trying to convince himself of all the things he’s going to do. Well, I remember something Felix Trinidad said when Fernando Vargas was doing a lot of bragging before they fought.
“He said there is an old Puerto Rican saying that goes like this: ‘It is one thing to call out the devil, and it is quite another to see him coming.’ You’ll see what happens to Timmy Bradley when he sees me coming.”
One man who will be watching on with interest, live on Sky Sports, is WBA boss Amir Khan.
The Brit is primed to take on the winner in a fight to find the undisputed number one at 140lbs.
But Don King, who promotes Alexander, has other ideas and insists success will set up a showdown with either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather!
Keys resigns Sky Sports role
Richard Keys has resigned from his role as football anchorman for Sky Sports in the wake of the row about female assistant referee Sian Massey.
Keys had already apologised for his remarks about Massey, and added to those regrets in a statement made after resigning.
Fellow presenter Andy Gray was fired on Tuesday as part of the controversy and Keys gave that decision as part of his reason for going.
“I am deeply sorry for my remarks and the offence they have caused; it was wrong and should not have happened,” Keys said in a statement.
“I have thought long and hard and reached the decision that it is time to move on. Going forward without Andy would have been almost impossible.
“I am and will remain proud of our work with football at Sky Sports and grateful to the many people who have worked with me. I wish Sky Sports continued success in the future.”
Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: “It is disappointing that Richard’s career at Sky should end in these circumstances.
“However, Richard recognises that his comments at the weekend were unacceptable and we note that he has made a full and public apology. We thank him for his time in helping make Sky Sports the success it is today.”
