Rovers fear over Jones injury

Blackburn caretaker manager Steve Kean has revealed teenage defender Phil Jones is in danger of missing the rest of the season.

The England Under 21 international is facing an operation on an injured knee after falling awkwardly in a challenge with Carlton Cole in the 1-1 Premier League draw against West Ham at Ewood Park.

Jones, 18, came on as a substitute for the injured Christopher Samba just before the hour mark but soon hobbled off the field after lasting just 10 minutes.

Kean confirmed that Jones has suffered a serious knee injury, while Jason Roberts damaged a hamstring and Samba was also forced off with a twisted knee.

“I think Phil Jones is going to be a long-term one,” Kean told Sky Sports.

“He’s got quite a bad knee injury, it’ll probably be four or five months, which is terrible.

“He’ll have an examination in the morning and probably have surgery in the morning, too. Jason Roberts has picked up a hamstring injury.

“We don’t think Chris Samba is as bad, it’s a slight twist in his ankle.”

Williams hails Speed decision

Ashley Williams has praised the appointment of Gary Speed as the new Wales manager.

Speed was appointed as John Toshack’s successor earlier this week after leaving Sheffield United.

The former Leeds and Everton star has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal to lead his country and Swansea defender Williams is looking forward to working under the ex-Wales captain.

Williams, who captained Wales in their last two Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland, believes Speed is the right man to take the country forward.

“I am happy with the appointment of Gary as the new Wales manager and I feel he is the right man for the job,” Williams told skysports.com.
Legend
“Gary is a Wales legend having made 85 appearances for his country and he is the most capped outfield player for Wales.

“Gary is also a Premier League legend with the clubs he has played for and the appearances he has made throughout his career.

“I am looking forward to working under Gary and I am sure he will bring some fresh ideas and methods to the team.

“I have spoken to a few lads in the Wales team about Gary’s appointment and they are all buzzing about it.

“We play the Republic of Ireland in the Nations Cup and I am sure all the lads will be keen to get Gary off to a winning start.”

No place like home for Ernie

Ernie Els heads up a strong home contingent when the 100th edition of the South African Open gets underway in Durban on Thursday.

European Tour stats package

The 41-year-old – who has won the tournament no fewer than four times – will shoulder local hopes along with the likes Retief Goosen, Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, Tim Clark and Charl Schwartzel.

World number 12 Els is the highest ranked player in the field and, despite struggling on his last outing at the Nedbank Challenge, heads into the event with high hopes.

“My game is really good at the moment and it would be great to end the year on a high note with victory in our national championship, especially since it’s the 100th and a very special one,” he stated.

“I’ve won four and I have finished in the top three another eight times. It’s a very important tournament for me.”

Goosen, who won the title in 1995 and 2005, added: “There is something indescribable about winning your national Open.
Proud

“I was 26 years old when I won my first title and it was one of the proudest moments of my career.

“Winning two SA Open titles rates right up there with winning two majors. I hope I can emulate that success this week.”

Clark, another two-time champion who won the last time the tournament was staged at Durban Country Club, is also determined to perform well on his home patch.

“It’s amazing how comfortable I feel on this course,” Clark said. “I can not have played here for years and when I get out there it all comes back to me.

“There will be pressure on me to win this week because I’ve won the last two played here.

“But winning The Players Championship (on the US Tour in May) has given me a bit more confidence when I get into the situation where a tournament is on the line.

“I’m no longer intimidated by that situation. I also just want to go out there and have fun. That’s the approach I had in 2002 and 2005.”

Betting patterns investigated

The association of British bookmakers have been alerted to irregular betting patterns following Motherwell’s clash with Hearts.

The pair met in SPL action on Tuesday night with Hearts claiming the points courtesy of a 2-1 success at Fir Park.

The irregular patterns specifically relate to the red card market where one bookmaker was offering 8/1 odds on there being a red card in the contest.

It is believed a number of bets, which originated in the Liverpool area, were made in the region of £200 to £500 along with utilising betting sites.

The bookies were forced to pay out as Motherwell’s Steve Jennings was booked in the contest and later shown a straight red card for ‘insulting, offensive and aggressive language’.

The Scottish Football Association confirmed in a statement: “Following information received from the Association of British Bookmakers (ABB), we are aware of alleged betting irregularities surrounding a sending-off incident in the Motherwell v Heart of Midlothian match on Tuesday, 14th December, 2010.

“At this stage, we are not in possession of the facts regarding the allegations and are waiting for further information from the Scottish Premier League in due course.

“Once we are in possession of all of the facts we will be in a better position to provide more detailed comment on the matter.

“In the meantime, we will be working with our colleagues at the Scottish Premier League to establish the details surrounding this incident.”

FA to offer Barton reminder

The Football Association intends to remind Joey Barton ‘of his responsibilities’ but will not be taking any action against him.

The Newcastle midfielder has once again fallen under the microscope following the Magpies’ victory over Liverpool on Saturday.

He is alleged to have made an offensive gesture towards Reds striker Fernando Torres during the 3-1 win at St James’ Park.

The FA has carried out an investigation into the incident and has decided that no punishment is required.

It will, however, be writing to Barton to warn him about his future conduct.

An FA spokesman said: “We will be writing to him to remind him of his responsibilities.”

Barton has already been in trouble with the authorities this season, with a petulant punch on Blackburn’s Morten Gamst Pedersen earning him a three-match ban.
